How the Air Conditioning Unit Works An air conditioning unit essentially works by removing heat from the inside of a building and expelling it outside. The basic components of an AC unit include an evaporator coil, a compressor, a condenser coil, and an expansion valve. It expels heat by using a refrigerant—a special substance used for heat transfer—that absorbs heat from the indoor air as it passes through the evaporator coil.
