As the years pass you might expect your air conditioner to not cool as well as it used to or to cycle on and off too frequently or even to rattle. A bad smell might not be something you’re expecting, however. If or when this should happen, your only thought is… What on earth can be the cause of that odor?
Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Emitting A Bad Smell
There can actually be a few reasons for your air conditioner emitting a bad smell. Interestingly enough, the reason can be as simple as the size of your air conditioner. An air conditioning unit that’s too large for the room can’t pull the moisture from the air the way it would if it were just the right size. This creates an environment that makes the residual humidity just right for the growth of mold which therefore causes that bad smell.
Another cause could be that the air conditioner’s drain might also be clogged with dirt. If the water can’t drain, it stays in the condensation tray of the machine and fosters the growth of mold and other bad smelling pathogens. All that’s needed in this case is for the tray to be properly drained and cleaned.
Continually running the AC on the low setting might save money, but it keeps the unit from dehumidifying the air. As with a unit that’s too big for the room, a low or ‘on’ running setting also promotes the growth of mold and noisome bacteria.
Even a central air conditioner can emit a bad smell if the water seeps into the pipes and stagnates. Bad smells can come from old, dirty filters, leaks and even dead and decaying animals that found their way into the ducts. Our professionals can help with this as well.
