In the Las Vegas heat, we rely heavily on our air conditioners to stay cool during the day. The air conditioner is often taken for granted, so when it breaks down or doesn’t behave like it normally does, it may be difficult to know what the problem is, especially if it hasn’t been serviced in a long time.

Air Conditioning Continually Running?

The symptom that can really through you, your energy consumption and your budget out of whack are when your air conditioner won’t turn off. Noticing the problem early is really important, and there are a few things that you can do to troubleshoot the issue before calling an air conditioning repair service.

Step 1: Check the Thermostat

If your air conditioner won’t turn off, one of the first things that should be checked is the thermostat. Sometimes it gets reset accidentally or set incorrectly so that there is a constant demand for cool air. If an air conditioner does not automatically switch off, it may be because the temperature has been set too low. One way to remedy this is to set the thermostat above room temperature. This action tells the air conditioner system to switch off. If the unit does not immediately turn off, then it is likely that the thermostat is not the problem.

Step 2: Clean the Condensing Unit

The purpose of the condenser coils is to disperse the heat. Dirty condenser coils are unable to disperse the heat as efficiently as clean ones. This inefficiency causes the air conditioner to work extra hard in order to cool down. In turn, this means that the air conditioner will be unable to maintain the correct temperature, forcing the compressor to run continuously so that it can cool the room. Check the condenser coils for dirt and debris and clean them if necessary.

Step 3: The Fan Limit Switch

On the air conditioning unit, there should be a “Fan Limit Switch” near or on the blower. This allows the fan to continue running independently from the settings on the thermostat. If there is a manual override, it can result in the fan running on its own. Change this setting from “manual” to “auto” so that the fan only runs when it is commanded by the thermostat settings.

Step 4: Conduct Thorough AC Maintenance

This will involve ensuring the air conditioning unit is clean and that all electricals are in place and not burned or broken. Air conditioning maintenance should be done on a regular basis in order to avoid high energy bills and to ensure your air conditioner unit runs effectively. If you are uncomfortable conducting maintenance on your own or none of the above steps got your unit to function normally again, hire a professional.
